Welcome  to  the  J.D.C.A.  Display  Day  2002  Page

The  Jaguar  Drivers  Club  of  Australia  -  Display  Day  &  Concours  2002

22 September 2002

What a fantastic sight.... 19  XJC 's lined up in the the Showring of Fox Studios

The Location...

Well it was a long time in the planning but the XJC register put on a great display at the recent JDCA annual Concours and Display Day in Sydney.  NINETEEN  yes, 19 XJC 's made it to the starting line-up which was a terrific effort by all the owners concerned.  This year the venue returned to the scene of the 2000 Jaguar National Rally..... Fox Studios in Sydney's eastern suburbs.  For those who have not been there before, it is a tremendous location with first class facilities.  The layout at Fox is well thought out, with lots of public toilets as well as lots of bars, cafes, restaurants, cinemas, market stalls and shops galore.  There are also lots of activities for children including an ice rink !  Oh, and there were also 282 various Jaguars and Daimlers on view, including 19  XJC 's and the ever popular XJC Information tent !

The Interstate Folks...

Flying in from Melbourne looking to buy an XJC were Julian Whitta and Dale Alexander.  I caught up with them both at the show, and what nice friendly people they are.  It is always nice to put faces to your email correspondents !  A few Country and Interstate visitors took advantage of a special deal arranged with the Gemini Hotel. Situated in the heart of Randwick shopping centre, it was only 5 minutes from the Fox Studios location, and only yards away from shops, cafes, cinemas, restaurants, coffee shops etc.  A group of  Victorian XJC stalwarts had driven up from Melbourne, Ballarat and Numurkah  - Colin & Maria Dyson, Ralph & Lorraine Ballard and Don Lewis.  Phil & Ros Evans and myself, met them in Zellini's Bar Restaurant for dinner on the night before the display.  Great meal...great company.  Not sure what Ros Evans was drinking but at one stage she had her hand down the front of my XJC shirt ?   We all retired fairly early in readiness for the big display day ahead of us.

Sunday...

Sunrise....Sunday was here and what a great day it was, clear blue skies and that hot shiny thing up in the sky !  First job was to give the car a quick wipe and polish, I find that the Meguiars Quik Detailer, mist and wipe is perfect for these occasions.   With the car polished I loaded up the van with all the tents, tables chairs etc and shot off to Fox Studios to set up the XJC tent prior to the opening.  My brother Paul was there to meet me and we quickly had the tent pegged ready for visitors.  We took the van home and picked up my XJC and another BRG coupe that was being offered for sale.  First stop was the Gemini Hotel to pick up the Interstate visitors and lead them down to the 'holding area.'  We arrived at the nominated meeting point which was the Gold members car park of the Sydney Football Stadium.  The car park was awash with Jaguars of every model and colour and about 8 other XJC 's all ready and waiting. By the time it was our turn to line up and head out the car park, everyone was itching to hit the display area and settle down for the day.   The XJC 's were second last register to depart the car park, just behind the e-types and just in front of all the XJ 's which is by far the biggest register in the club.  Without too much trouble and fuss, we were soon directed onto the green pastures of the Showring, and lined up on our designated area.  Unlike most other motoring clubs in Sydney, the Jaguar Drivers Club likes to display the cars in register groups, ie: e-types together, mark II 's etc.   As we lined up in formation a few people questioned 'why the space in front of the tent?'  It soon became clear when Alf and Alma Araullo arrived in their Old English White Daimler Double Six XJC.  The feature XJC was going to be the 1969 Series I prototype XJC, but its appearance was subject to a 'no-sale' in Melbourne. Alas it was sold, so it was heading to Perth with its new owner, rather than to Sydney for our special day.  I had been in discussions with new owner Adam Wright on the possibility of bringing it to Sydney, but a death in their family finally put paid to any hopes of bringing it east rather west.  Adam says that we will see it in Sydney one day.

Missed Out...

Unluckiest XJC devotees who missed out on the day were Andrew Brown and Greg Jones.  Andrew's Old English White, Jaguar 12C had recently made the journey from Brisbane to Sydney without incident, but two days before the show the gearbox decided to blow !  Andrew was heartbroken, especially when he saw all the other XJC 's lined up.  Greg Jones of Newcastle, had his stunning Signal Red V12 Jaguar coupe, stuck up on the Gold Coast so he too was unable to join us. If you know of another unlucky story of someone who could not make it, then please let us know.

The Great XJC Chassis Draw...

At 12:30 the chassis number of every XJC on display went into the draw for some great prizes.  All the owners crowded into the XJC tent for the big moment.  It had been arranged that long time Jaguar fan, Lee Lin Chin from SBS Television would hand out the prizes.  Unfortunately due to a late programming change, Lee was unable to make it.  Stepping in to fill the void was the clubs own  celebrity Bob Edgar Esquire, who doubles as our membership secretary and XJS racing hoon.

XJC Folk...

As well as meeting Julian Whitta and Dale Alexander from Melbourne, we also met Rob Fletcher from Bathurst.  Not sure if Rob was looking to add another XJC to his collection or not !  Rob had just recently bought a OEW 4.2 model to add to the V12 coupe he owns.  John Swinfield from Bowral was giving all the coupes the once over as he is looking to buy.  John took a shine to Gavin Partridges British Racing Green coupe, one of three BRG coupes on display.  Damien Abdallah, who recently sold his Midnight Blue series I XJ6, was another XJC fan caught looking at the coupes for sale.  Will we see you and Peter in a coupe at the next show Damien ?  Former XJC owner and JDCA Life member Chris Haigh, could only shake his head in disbelief and say, " unbelievable to see this many XJC 's."  Paul Williams was observed giving all the 'For Sale' coupes a good once-over, and at least one phone number went into the notebook !  Warren Wilson, Marketing Manager for Avis Australia, was also spotted 'coupe checking.'  In fact to me, it appeared that we had more visitors looking at the coupes than ever before.  Bob McKittrick drove his XJC all the way from Mudgee to be on view and advertise for sale.  Julian Whitta bought it and drove it all the way home to Melbourne.  Julian later told me that the car ran beautifully without incident, just seemed to run a bit rich that's all.  Not bad for twenty five year old cars are they !  Do you know of any more gossip ?

Apologies if  I left anybody out ?  Drop me a line so I can add your name and feel humbled.

see you under the clock tower at Fox     NEXT  YEAR ! ! !
